Walkin' the Dog is a benefit walk sponsored by Epsilon Sigma Alpha International for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital located in Memphis, Tennessee, is the largest childhood cancer research center in the United States. Founded in 1962 by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, the hospital researches and treats thousands of children with pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood illnesses each year. The hospital's daily operating costs are approximately $467,000 which are covered primarily through public contributions. St. Jude patients are treated without regard to race, religion, creed, or ability to pay, with the hospital covering all costs associated with treatment beyond those covered by insurance.
No child is denied treatment because of inability to pay. Treatment protocols are shared with hospitals around the world.
Last year 105 dogs and one goat participated in the walk, including a small pack of Dachshunds. The walk raised $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
This year the Dachshund Rescue of San Diego team raised the most money of all teams entered in the Walk, over $1,000. Walkin' the Dog presented a plaque in appreciation of the team's fund raising efforts.
