The two main sources for rescue dogs are the county animal shelters and private individuals who can no longer provide for the animal.
Dachshunds boast a long life span. It is not uncommon for them to live in excess of 16 years.
They tend to be more prone to back problems due to their length. A majority of the problems can be avoided by keeping the dog’s weight in check and providing plenty of exercise.
Research the breed prior to making a decision. Although they are wonderful companions and pets they can be stubborn and "self-willed." If you need to be in control and have a low threshold of frustration this may not be the dog for you.
